Etta James “Can’t Shake It” (1964, Unreleased. From Who’s Blue?, 2011)

Normally the “why the hell was that vaulted?” sweepstakes seems like a purely Motown phenomenon, but it’s decidedly refreshing when it happens at other labels. Etta James and Chess records is the source of tonight’s delight.

From the same session that spawned her bombastic flop “Mellow Fellow” we have this beautifully arranged romp about the thrill of first love delivered with the grit and glee only Etta could pump into such settings. Perhaps it was vaulted due to it’s similar traits to Jackie Ross’s leap into the charts, but robbed no more are we.
