September 2011
“For more than fifteen years we have been moving away from real journalism toward the creation of a sleazoid info-tainment culture in which the lines between Oprah and Phil and Geraldo and Diane and even Ted, between the New York Post and Newsday, are too often indistinguishable. In this new culture of journalistic titillation, we teach our readers and our viewers that the trivial is significant, that the lurid and the loopy are more important than real news. We do not serve our readers and viewers, we pander to them.”
* “This cover story of June 6, 1992 for The New Republic magazine seems especially relevant in light of the Murdoch scandal of 2011. The piece, written for the twentieth anniversary of the Watergate break-in, identified the pernicious influence of tabloid/sleaze journalism that, even then, was beginning to dominate so much of the American media.” [Full PDF available at Bernstein’s website].
Dinah Washington “September in the Rain” (Mercury 1162, R&B#5 Pop#23, 1961)
The first rain of fall fell today in the Bay Area, and as I ran my errands today (and noticed that my windshield wipers needed replacing) I noticed all the traces of pending fall popping up, from the waning daylight hours to pumpkins in the produce section in plenty.
So no other song reminds me what’s so great about this time of the year than this song. And with Dinah as tart as a Braeburn Apple, it doesn’t get any more representative of the season.
Just wanted to apologise in advance, as posts onmyowntwohands will be a bit erratic over the next few weeks. Please bear with me. Hope to be back on deck soon. Happy tumbling, happy life, stay safe. x
Come on, little boy. You don't need to cry. You don't need to cry your eyes out. Come on, kid! Keep your head up and fight.
